About a week ago I received one of my grails, the greek Spiderman #129, or, as it is known in Greece, ΣΠΑΙΝΤΕΡ-ΜΑΝ #18. I can't stop looking at it, it represents a lot for me: first, the end of a long hunt, as I now have all of the original 64 Kabanas Hellas Spider-man issues, but also it feels like a reward for my long-time interest and desire to always know more about the field of foreign comics. That curiosity is what drives me, a promise that when you think you know it all, something new turns up that changes everything. Now, as those of you who own this issue probably already know, this is just the cover. The story inside is instead from Amazing Spider-man issue #13, which explains the text under ΣΠΑΙΝΤΕΡ-ΜΑΝ: Η ΑΠΕΙΛΗ τον ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟ which means "The threat of Mysterio". The text at the bottom - ΡΑΝΤΕΒΟΥ ΜΕ ΤΟ ΘΑΝΑΤΟ, meaning "Appointment with death" - was apparently created specifically for this cover. The STORY of Spider-man's first encounter with Punisher was printed in the following issue, #19, again with a mis-matching cover from Amazing Spider-man #132. Interesting enough, the title ΡΑΝΤΕΒΟΥ ΜΕ ΤΟ ΘΑΝΑΤΟ is nowhere to be found in that issue. Instead it has a box on the cover that says Ο ΤΙΜΟΡΟΣ ΧΤΥΠΑΕΙ ΞΑΝΑ, meaning "The Punisher strikes again" (not far from the original 129's "The Punisher strikes twice").

What a beaut Bjorn! I know how long you have been hunting this issue and what it represents. So happy you have finally taken down the white buffalo that has eluded you for so long. I was wondering though? Can you post a pic from the splash page from issue 19? I just wanna see that classic splash page in Greek? I don't think I have ever seen it.....

One splash page, coming up, sir. Do you want fries with that? If you order the plus size menu for an extra $2 you can get the next three pages.

And actually I do want fries bro! Seasoned please..... Im gonna use that page for something. Speaking of using for something..... How bout a compare and contrast? Punnys outfit was colored sorta strangely int he Greek book uh? But how damn interesting is this.... did the Greeks actually re-color the Spidey statue? Did the splash page in Marvel tales #106 color the statue? I cant remember? Did Kabanas pull the splash page from the Marvel tales or did they genuinely re-color the statue? Pretty neat.....

Marvel Tales #106 wasn't published until august 1979, and the greek issue is from october 1978. I checked the other countries' editions and most of them that used colors, used the original ones. A few made color changes to the title and sound effects. So yes, it is quite possible that Greece made their own coloring. I don't have access to the german edition, however. There's also a UK annual from 1975 that I'm missing, that reprints the issue.

Well I know with some of the other Kabanas issues of the period the color changes inside were indeed wacky. I bet this is unique to the Greek book. I will have to check the German one… ill dig it out in a bit. Pretty darn cool man…. and another reason why the Kabanas Marvels are truly something to hold dear if you are a marvelmanic. Of all the Bronze age foreigns these books are some of the most novel and unique to me….. Love to see others members Greek 129's if they can show them off. I know Tony has one with some funky cutting on some interior pages.

I agree. Those Kabanas Hellas publications are as wacky as can be. The 1st series of Captain America is a prime example. They got even more bizzare as the series went on to collapse .. some incredible colour "reimaginings" and cover choices (mostly taken from inside panels in those later issues). I've got about 57 of those 63 issues .. the hunt continues
