Want to get involved but don't know where to begin? Here are a few of the unique terms that have come to be associated with international comic collecting... by no means do I purport myself to be an expert, but we're building this community as we go. If you have additions or clarifications, post them!
Major terms:
"International" vs "Foreign" - Because so many countries are involved, no matter who you are or where your from, most of these comics are foreign. However, because of an implied American bias, we usually use the term "international."
"Set" - Various editions of the same comic. Most commonly this is based on cover art, but can also include interior contents which have been printed with another cover. Sets are one of the most gratifying aspects of international collecting.
"Non-canon" - Stories and/or art that originate from another country and deviate from the generally accepted continuity (may not be fully licensed by the copyright holder).
"Trans-Creation Material" - Stories and/or art that originate from another country but are authorized by the copyright holder.
Minor terms:
"Foreign-Indigenous Bias" - The tendency for collectors in foreign countries to view their own local production as inferior to imported American issues which are viewed as the "real" issues. Also, less commonly, a "protectionist" view among collectors in a country who resist outsiders extracting collectible comics.
"Ghost" - An edition that has been reported but has very few, if any, confirmed copies.
"Conflict Comics" – Comics that came to market after surviving a time and place in crisis, such as the Former Yugoslavia in the 90s.
