My latest acquisition: MANGA CLASSICS: THE STORIES OF EDGAR ALLAN POEcover by UKA NAGAO (Manga Classics, Inc. / Richmond Hill / Ontario / Canada) This adds another country to the POE project... CANADA. Say what? Yep, that's where this THICK 6" x 8-3/4" hardbound was published. I did some research. Although every artist involved appears to be JAPANESE, and the book is "Manga" style-- read from right-to-left-- it appears this collection is NOT reprints from JAPAN. I've already seen the "Graphic Planet" book that apparently had involvement of "Antarctic Press", where American artists imitate Japanese styles... but here, it's actually Japanese artists, but working IN CANADA. Go figure.

For a while, I wondered if I could ever get this thing. It's an anthology FANZINE. Very THICK cover stock, but fortunately, built-in creases near the spine, so I'm hoping I'll be able to do high-res scans of the interior pages. A couple months back, I found it on sale from the publisher. Their website seemed set up to deal with the USA, but when I tried to put in an order, I got a POP-UP saying they had no delivery service to my address. A pair of messages (one in English, one in French) yieleded ZERO replies. Then last month I decided to check Ebay France for the first time. Someone had it! BUT... they said they didn't ship to my address.... EXCEPT, I could contact the seller for an "exception". I did, he replied, I ordered, he sent. It got here... in 23 DAYS. Tracking indicated it should have gotten here by May 14, so this was one day early (heh). Amazingly, after all this effort for such an obviously obscure, RARE item, the total cost for me was $10.12 (including a mere $4.50 for shipping). So I'm not surprised it took so long to get here-- standard time lag from Mexico. I already had nice scans of the cover and splash page, but the rest of the story was WAY too small to wanna post it at my blog as it was. So I'm really thrilled I got ahold of the book. Most of the art on the various stories is VERY crude, raw, rough, dare I say, amateurish. Hey, it's a fanzine. But NOT this one. A quick comment-- I just scanned in the " Hop Frog" adaptation. Because the cover stock was so stiff, and the binding was not put together that well, 2 whole sheets CAME LOOSE while I was doing it. I just figured, OH well, never mind. When I did that one Italian digest with Gina Dauro art, I bought the cheapest, most beat-up copy I could find, KNOWING up-front that I was going to inflict physical DAMAGE to the book, in order to get DECENT scans. As I have now with this. The book is sealed away in a mylite bag, and stored in a magazine box, where I'll probably never touch it again. I mean, since it's all in French, I can't read it anyway. The whole point of getting my hands on it was to do HIGH-RES scans of the Poe story, which I can then translate & post online... eventually.

Well, well... my latest acquisition: TALES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE: RETOLD TIMELESS CLASSICS (1999) A 5-1/4" x 7-3/4" slim paperback. Not quite what I was expecting (or hoping for). This is, as it says on the cover, " Retold Timeless Classics". In that, it shares in common with the " Moby Books" from the late 70s (alias " Great Illustrated Classics") that the stories have been COMPLETELY re-written with new text, presumably to make them seem more "contemporary" and, in theory (I suppose) easier for YOUNG readers to deal with. Myself, I don't see the point, but, what the hey. I mean, more and more, when I do English translations of foreign POE comics, I try to use as much of Poe's original text as possible! At least the Moby Books had, for me, a real selling point-- 50% of them (that is, EVERY-- OTHER-- page) were full-page illustrations. This book only has 1 illustration per story-- and not even quite that much. How's this for IRONY? " The Oval Portrait"-- a story about an illustration-- has NO illustration to go with it. I mean, really... WTF??? I'll be adding the illos to the various "Galleries of Illustrations" of each story, and when I get up to 1999, I may also set up a gallery just to have all the illos for this one book in one place. Other that that, while it might make a nice read in a doctor's office or at the car mechanic's, I can't really reccomend this one much. Art by Michael A. Aspengren

MISTERIOS DE CUARTO CERRADO (Mysteries Of Closed Rooms) cover by LEANDRO FERNANDEZ (Pictus / Argentina / 2014)
8 comics adaptations of stories from Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Gilbert K. Chesterton, Jacques Futrelle, and of course, Edgar Allan Poe.
The stories I got this for were "THE PURLOINED LETTER" illustrated by Oscar Capritso, and "THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE" illustrated by Leandro Fernandez.
A special thanks must go to Delfino Maroni at the QuioSquito online book store in ARGENTINA. The site is really set up to attract foreign sales, and he went way beyond the pale to make my purchase as pleasant as possible. The international shipping was a lot more than it could have been, but I specifically wanted the National Postal System, as it was the only way I could make sure it was delivered to my new PO BOX, instead of my porch. Too much chaos of late in my neighborhood, and the added expense at BOTH ends is to ensure I eliminate a lot of STRESS related to it.

SAMANIEGO (Novedades Editores / Mexico / November 15, 1984) CUENTOS DE TERROR: "LA MUERTA ROJA" / Version 20 "LA CITA" ("THE APPOINTMENT") / ("THE ASSIGNATION") / Version 1 "METZENGERSTEIN" / Version 8 "EL CUERVO" / Version 21 Adaptations by Remy Bastien Jr. / Text by Mecedes Arce B. / Art by ALFONSO MARTINEZ
These things rarely ever turn up on Ebay, and when they do, I have to JUMP on them, or they're gone... and they may not turn up again!
I've been slowly compiling indexes (and cover mages) of these 2 series: NOVELAS INMORTALES (in B&W) and JOYAS DE LA LITERATURA (in color). There are literally around 900 issues of each, and most of them I have never laid eyes on, nor are they indexed anywhere in any comprehensive form. I'm hoping to change that. But in the meantime, I have to keep an eye out.

My latest acquisition & cover restoration: TALES FROM ETERNAL WORLDS #1(Rogue Comics / Ireland / February 2019) cover by Oisin Roche
This is my very FIRST comic from Ireland. It's a magazine-size "TPB" format, with painted covers (front and back) and a contents page that clearly mimicks a design from the Warren books. It's entirely the work of ONE artist, Oisin Roche, and it's one of the STRANGEST books I have ever laid eyes on. I can tell this guy knows how to draw, but his inks / finishes are just... BIZARRE. The stories (by a variety of writers, including Poe) are, if anything, even more bizarre. With some of the crazy S*** I've seen in the last few years, this isn't the most disturbing, but I honestly think if it hadn't been for a 5-page adaptation of " Silence" (one of Poe's most obscure, indefinable works), I doubt I would have gone after this. The Poe story has the MOST accomplished art, by far. The rest meanders somewhere between "ethereal" and "unfinished" somehow. I'm glad Morten F. Thomsen pointed this out to me. Being it's from such a small company, I figured there might be a limited print run, which was why I jumped on it so fast. But I guess part of me is hoping this guy, if he does more issues, DOESN'T do any more Poe. This one book is more than enough of his work, for me. (I hate sounding negative, but I am trying to be honest.)

This is HUGE. I've just polished off the FINAL story from Taika. After this, if I tackle any more Taika stories, they'll either be if I get ahold of a pair of comics I currently have fuzzy scans of, or, if I decide to translate some " Dracula" episodes. I've been working on Taika, off-and-on, for over 4-1/2 YEARS, ever since I first found Luiz Saidenberg's version of " The Black Cat". Toni Rodrigues really helped kick it into high gear when he e-mailed me 8 complete stories, all HIGH-RES scans from the original 60s comics. It'll be great to FINALLY be able to move forward, to other things, from other countries. This turned up as a reprint from 1973 at the Banca Dos Gibis Brazucas blog, thanks to Flavio Barbier. If anyone can help me identify where it was ORIGINALLY published, you'll have my thanks (and credit at the blog). from ( currently unknown) (Editora Taika / Brazil / 1968) comes the 1st comics version of Poe's "THE IMP OF THE PERVERSE"Art by Ignacio Justo & "Edegar"
